"Tell me about yourself" for freshers: a 60-second answer that sets up the interview

It is usually the first question, and it shapes what the interviewer asks next. A good fresher answer is short, specific and points toward the role. Here's a structure you can adapt, with two sample answers written for this guide.

Quick check: paste your resume and a job description into the free ATS checker to see your score and missing keywords in under a minute.

A four-part structure (about 60 seconds)

  • Present: who you are now — degree, branch, college, graduating year.
  • Proof: one or two things you've done that match the role — a project, internship or achievement, with a result.
  • Strengths: two skills you can back with examples if asked.
  • Why this role: one line connecting your interests to the job or company.

Sample answer: engineering fresher

"I'm Rahul, a final-year B.Tech Computer Science student at a college in Pune, graduating in 2026. Over the last year I built a bus-tracking web app with React and Node that around 200 students in my college use daily, and during a two-month internship I wrote SQL reports that the operations team now uses every week. I'm strongest in Java and problem-solving — I've solved about 300 problems on coding platforms. I'm applying here because I want to work on large client systems, and this role would let me build on both my backend and database work."

Sample answer: non-tech fresher (B.Com / BBA)

"I'm Sneha, I've just completed my B.Com from Delhi University. In my final year I interned with a CA firm for three months, where I helped reconcile accounts for eight small business clients and learned Tally and advanced Excel. I also led my college's finance club, organising two investment workshops with around 150 attendees. I'm detail-oriented and comfortable explaining numbers to people, which is why this analyst role appeals to me."

What to avoid

  • Reciting your resume line by line or starting from Class 10.
  • Family background, hobbies or hometown details unless asked.
  • Vague claims like "I'm hardworking and a team player" without an example.
  • Memorising word for word — it sounds robotic. Learn the four points and speak naturally.

How to practise

Record yourself answering once, then cut anything that doesn't support the role. Aim for 45–75 seconds. Practise follow-ups too: interviewers will dig into whichever project you mention.

Upplio's AI mock interview can read your saved resume and ask follow-ups on your own projects. Also see our guide to HR interview questions for freshers and the STAR method.

Frequently asked questions

How long should 'tell me about yourself' be for a fresher?

About 45 to 75 seconds. That is long enough to cover your education, one or two achievements and why you want the role.

Should freshers mention hobbies?

Only if a hobby shows a skill relevant to the role, such as running a coding club or a blog. Otherwise leave it for later questions.

Is it okay to memorise the answer?

Memorise the structure and key facts, not the exact words. A natural delivery comes across as more confident.

Can I practise this answer online?

Yes. Upplio's first AI mock interview is free and gives feedback on structure, clarity and relevance.
