EXL Interview Experience: Analytics, Consulting & Ops Tracks

EXL Service runs one of the more analytical-heavy loops in the India consulting/analytics market. Candidates who treat it like a generic BPO interview underperform; candidates who treat it like a data-consulting case interview convert.

The typical EXL loop

  1. Online aptitude test (verbal, quant, logical) — ~60 minutes.
  2. SQL and Excel test — 8–12 SQL queries, 4–6 Excel scenarios.
  3. Analytics / consulting case round — 45 minutes.
  4. Technical round for the specific practice (BFSI, Insurance, Healthcare analytics).
  5. HR round — fit, communication, salary expectations.

SQL round — what actually comes up

  • Second-highest salary from an employee table — using window functions and without.
  • Running total of sales per region ordered by month.
  • Detect duplicates in a customer table and delete keeping the earliest record.
  • Join a fact and dimension table and pivot the result by month.
  • Difference between INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, and CROSS APPLY with a use case.

Excel round

Expect INDEX-MATCH, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS with multiple conditions, pivot table with calculated field, and one Power Query scenario like unpivoting a monthly report. The interviewer often screens-shares and asks you to think aloud — narrate every step.

Case interview — the EXL flavour

Cases are almost always operational analytics: 'A US health insurer is seeing rising claim-processing time. Diagnose and recommend.' Structure with an issue tree, ask for two data points that would narrow the diagnosis, quantify the impact of the top branch, and end with three implementation recommendations — one quick win, one medium, one strategic.

Behavioural questions that decide the offer

  • Why EXL and not a Big 4 or a product analytics role?
  • Describe your most complex SQL / Python project — what would you improve now?
  • Tell me about a time you handled ambiguous client requirements.
  • How do you prioritise when three stakeholders escalate the same week?
  • Are you comfortable with US shifts / rotational shifts for the first 12 months?

EXL interviewers weight communication and structured thinking above raw technical depth. A candidate who explains a mediocre SQL solution clearly beats a strong one who mumbles through it.
