The Case Interview Playbook: Cracking Consulting, Strategy, and Product Interviews

Case interviews reward structure over speed. Here's the framework for market sizing, profitability, and product-sense cases that consulting and PM candidates actually get asked.

Case interviews look nothing like the behavioral or technical formats most candidates have practiced, which is exactly why strong candidates from other backgrounds often stumble on their first attempt. The format rewards a visible, structured thought process more than a single correct number at the end.

Every case, whether it's market sizing, profitability, or product-sense, benefits from the same opening move: pause, restate the problem in your own words, and lay out a structure before touching any numbers. Interviewers are grading the scaffolding as much as the arithmetic.

Profitability cases usually decompose cleanly into revenue minus costs, then further into price, volume, fixed costs, and variable costs — naming that tree out loud before diving into any one branch keeps the conversation legible to the interviewer. Market-sizing cases reward reasonable, clearly-stated assumptions over precise recall of statistics.

Product-sense cases, common in PM interviews, ask for a different muscle: identifying a user problem, prioritizing ruthlessly, and defending trade-offs rather than listing every possible feature. The candidates who stand out are the ones willing to explain what they'd deliberately leave out and why.
